Dolsten’s career, defined by advancing over 150 clinical candidates, aligns with Varda’s objective to leverage microgravity for molecular formulations impossible to replicate on Earth. By utilizing the absence of gravity, the company aims to alter the behavior of active pharmaceutical ingredients, potentially unlocking new classes of life-saving treatments. Varda co-founder Delian Asparouhov noted that the company is now moving beyond mere technological demonstration, looking to integrate space-based processing into the standard drug development lifecycle.
Since its inaugural 2023 mission, Varda has accelerated its flight schedule, with ten reentry missions slated through 2027. The company’s W-series vehicles, capable of enduring Mach 25 returns, serve as the foundational infrastructure for this push. For Varda, the goal is to transform orbital manufacturing from an experimental niche into a reliable, repeatable component of the global pharmaceutical supply chain.
