Critics Rally Against Paramount Bid for Warner Bros. Discovery

With Netflix abandoning its acquisition bid, Paramount Skydance is moving closer to consolidating a massive media empire. The prospect of the Ellison family, led by a prominent Trump donor, controlling networks like CBS and CNN has triggered urgent calls for federal antitrust intervention to prevent potential censorship.

Former FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya warned that the deal could grant a single family unprecedented influence over information pipelines. He cited recent programming decisions, including the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s show and the exclusion of a Democratic Senate candidate’s interview, as evidence of a shift toward partisan control. Bedoya emphasized that the acquisition, backed by $24 billion in foreign capital from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, represents a dangerous consolidation of power.

Craig Aaron, co-CEO of Free Press, argued the merger threatens democratic norms by placing newsrooms and film studios under the thumb of pliant billionaires. Meanwhile, journalist David Dayen cautioned that Paramount is attempting to finalize the deal at high speed to prevent regulators from effectively untangling the assets once merged. While some lawmakers see the deal as a fait accompli, others remain defiant. Senator Ruben Gallego warned that future administrations would seek to dismantle such conglomerates, telling executives that their current investments would ultimately result in financial ruin and forced leadership changes.
