The project connects facilities in Crawford and Walworth counties before extending to the Illinois state line. While the precise border connection point remains under review, the initiative aims to increase grid efficiency by utilizing high-capacity 765-kV lines, which require fewer physical structures than lower-voltage alternatives. MGS, selected through a competitive bidding process in 2026, is currently hosting eight public open houses throughout August to gather routing feedback.
Industry leaders emphasize the economic necessity of the project, noting that the infrastructure will support job growth and grid reliability across the Upper Midwest. MISO’s own analysis suggests the regional portfolio, which includes this project, provides economic benefits between 1.8 and 3.5 times its total cost. Following the current feedback phase, MGS intends to present preliminary route options this autumn ahead of a formal filing for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin in early 2027.
