Secret Contract Reveals Shielded Donors for Trump’s White House Ballroom

After months of legal pressure, the government watchdog Public Citizen has forced the release of a funding agreement for President Donald Trump’s $400 million White House ballroom project, exposing provisions that allow wealthy donors to contribute anonymously while bypassing federal conflict-of-interest safeguards.

The contract, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, effectively limits public and congressional oversight of the project. While major corporations like Amazon, Google, and Lockheed Martin have publicly confirmed their involvement, the agreement provides an explicit mechanism for others to remain hidden. Ethics experts warn this creates a dangerous lack of accountability, as there is no way to determine if these anonymous contributors have pending federal business or are seeking policy favors in exchange for their support.

Charles Tiefer, a retired law professor at the University of Baltimore, noted that the document functions as an escape hatch, allowing the White House to block congressional inquiries into the donor list. Kathleen Clark of Washington University in St. Louis described the contract’s limited conflict-of-interest review process as a sham. Senator Richard Blumenthal echoed these concerns, condemning the administration for keeping the public in the dark regarding the financial interests of those funding the project. Public Citizen attorney Wendy Liu stated that the administration's initial attempt to withhold the records was unlawful, emphasizing that the fight for full transparency remains ongoing.
