BlueGreen Alliance Marks Two Decades of Labor-Climate Advocacy

The organization, which remains the only national coalition of its kind, spent the anniversary panel reflecting on the fundamental tension between environmental regulation and manufacturing employment. United Steelworkers International President Roxanne Brown, who serves as a co-chair, emphasized that the alliance’s longevity stems from a commitment to shared movement building rather than transactional policy deals.

NRDC Action Fund President Manish Bapna noted that while the coalition has secured significant legislative wins, those gains currently face political headwinds. Executive Director Jason Walsh argued that the transition to a clean economy remains fragile if it excludes the workforce. He warned that climate policies will fail to stick unless working people are positioned at the center of the transition, rather than being treated as an afterthought in elite-driven economic agendas. Looking ahead, the alliance aims to scale its model to address both the accelerating climate crisis and widening income inequality.
