TotalEnergies Completes First West African Crude Trade via Argus Platform

A 950,000-barrel shipment of Nigerian Qua Iboe crude has been traded on the Argus Open Markets platform at a premium of $4.10 per barrel to Dated Brent. This transaction, valued at over $115 million, marks a shift toward digitized, transparent price discovery for physical oil markets in the Atlantic basin.

The deal between TotalEnergies and an unnamed counterparty represents a departure from the traditional, opaque bilateral negotiations that have long defined the West African crude sector. By utilizing the Argus Open Markets (AOM) platform, the participants brought bids and offers into a single, auditable venue, allowing for real-time visibility into regional price differentials.

Adrian Binks, chairman and CEO of Argus Media, noted that the milestone arrives as buyers increasingly look to West Africa to replace lost Mideast Gulf crude supplies. As these grades become central to global pricing strategies, the industry is moving away from fragmented, private discussions toward platforms that provide clear, observable data for market participants. The AOM framework allows companies to maintain the essential nature of physical negotiations while simultaneously contributing to a more robust and verifiable assessment process for Nigerian and Angolan crude grades.
