MDU Resources Clears Path for $3.2 Billion Bakken East Pipeline

The project carries a price tag between $2.7 billion and $3.2 billion, supported by a significant $50 million annual commitment from the North Dakota Industrial Commission. Construction is slated to unfold over several seasons between 2028 and 2030, with a phased rollout that brings the first segment to completion in late 2029. The full system, reaching a WBI Energy compressor station near Mapleton, is expected to be operational by the end of 2030.

Nicole A. Kivisto, CEO of MDU Resources Group, emphasized that the pipeline addresses regional demand while bolstering the reliability of existing infrastructure. The scope includes constructing four new compressor stations and upgrading three existing facilities. As WBI Energy moves toward the building phase, the parent company is currently weighing debt and equity financing options, including potential partnerships to manage the project's capital requirements.
