ICEYE and Nokia partner to build sovereign satellite networks

Defense forces and civil authorities increasingly face the risk of losing command systems when terrestrial networks fail. To counter this, ICEYE and Nokia are joining forces to develop secure, sovereign low Earth orbit satellite communication systems that allow nations to retain full control over their own space and ground infrastructure.

The partnership combines ICEYE’s expertise in sovereign space missions with Nokia’s established track record in secure networking. By integrating satellites, ground segments, and ruggedized terminals, the companies aim to provide high-throughput, low-latency connectivity that complements existing military and commercial networks rather than replacing them. This infrastructure is specifically designed to function in contested environments where resilience and data integrity are paramount.

Rafal Modrzewski, CEO of ICEYE, emphasized that nations require independence from foreign commercial operators to maintain operational security. The first satellites under this initiative are scheduled for launch in 2028. Justin Hotard, CEO of Nokia, highlighted that the integration of Physical AI with secure, cross-domain connectivity will grant governments the situational awareness needed to operate effectively. Both executives are set to discuss the importance of European technological sovereignty at the Helsinki Security Forum on October 2.
