The mission serves as a direct successor to the GOMX-4A and GOMX-4B projects from 2018, which successfully mapped maritime and air traffic surveillance across the Arctic. By utilizing a modular platform, the current mission focuses on testing advanced hardware that could define the architecture of forthcoming satellite constellations. Morten Bisgaard, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, noted that the project is designed to provide critical performance data and operational experience that will inform future customer missions.
Beyond communications testing, the GOMX-5 mission incorporates sustainability features aligned with the ESA Zero Debris initiative. The satellite is equipped with technologies for collision avoidance and responsible end-of-life disposal, addressing the growing industry mandate for cleaner orbital operations. Following the launch, GomSpace will manage the spacecraft’s lifecycle, reinforcing its position as an end-to-end provider for small satellite solutions in a market spanning over 60 countries.
