Karen Love Retires After Shaping Texas Community Health Advocacy

After nearly two decades of steering policy and care delivery in Texas, Karen Love is stepping down from her role as President and CEO of Cook Children’s Health Plan. Her departure marks the end of a tenure that redefined how community-based providers navigate the legislative landscape in Austin.

Love assumed leadership at Cook Children’s in 2018, capping a trajectory that included pivotal roles at the Harris County Healthcare Alliance and Community Health Choice. Beyond her executive duties, she was a primary architect of the Texas Association of Community Health Plans (TACHP), an organization created to amplify the voices of local health providers within the state government.

TACHP leadership credited Love’s foundational work for the organization’s current influence. Craig Smith, Chair of TACHP, noted that the association would not exist without her early guidance. Her transition, effective this week, concludes a career defined by bridging the gap between clinical operations and public policy, ensuring that North Texas families maintained consistent access to essential health resources.
