Portland Research Site Marks 50 Years of Alzheimer’s Breakthroughs

Since 1976, Headlands Research - Summit Portland has operated as a cornerstone of neurological advancement, participating in clinical trials for every class of FDA-approved Alzheimer’s medication since 1993. The organization is now celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of contributions to psychiatric and central nervous system research.

The Portland-based site has evolved from a local medical provider into a key partner for pharmaceutical firms, having completed over 500 clinical trials. Under the guidance of Dr. Scott Losk, a neuropsychologist who joined in 1990, the team has expanded its reach beyond memory disorders to include studies on diabetes, obesity, and vaccines. Dr. Losk’s tenure includes serving as a principal investigator for more than 75 Alzheimer’s-related trials, cementing the facility's reputation in the field.

CEO Kyle Burtnett highlighted the site's enduring impact, noting that their work spans the medical spectrum from early acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to contemporary anti-amyloid antibodies. While the Memory Health Center remains a central focus, the organization continues to adapt its clinical capabilities to meet modern therapeutic demands. As the site enters its sixth decade, it maintains a dual commitment to sustaining its legacy in central nervous system research while aggressively pursuing innovations in cardiometabolic health and preventative medicine.
