At Shoptalk Europe 2026 in Barcelona, Zalando Co-CEO David Schröder detailed a massive pivot toward machine learning, revealing that 90% of the company's site content is now AI-generated. The shift marks a fundamental change in how the fashion giant manages both its digital storefront and physical fulfillment networks.
Zalando’s AI assistant has seen rapid adoption, surging from six million users last year to ten million in the first quarter alone. Unlike traditional search queries, this conversational interface encourages customers to engage in multi-turn dialogues about personal preferences and specific occasions. Beyond the interface, AI-driven size recommendations have reduced return rates by 8%, preventing millions of packages from being processed annually. Schröder emphasized that the primary challenge for European firms remains the transition from world-class research to scalable, commercial products. To address logistics bottlenecks, the company is deploying 50 AI-powered robots from Nomagic across its European hubs. These units, nicknamed Richard, utilize computer vision to handle high-rotation fashion items, including notoriously difficult shoeboxes. By adjusting grips in real-time, the robots solve a long-standing automation headache where standard arms often dislodge lids. Following a successful pilot that reached 100,000 picks per day, the technology is currently active in Germany and Italy, with further rollouts scheduled for the Netherlands, Sweden, and France.
