Minnesota Examiner Rules Alex Pretti Death a Homicide

The Hennepin County medical examiner has officially classified the January 24 death of Alex Pretti as a homicide, citing multiple gunshot wounds. The 37-year-old nurse was killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis, an incident that has intensified public scrutiny of the administration's aggressive enforcement tactics in the region.

ProPublica recently identified the shooters as US Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez. According to a sworn statement from a physician who attempted to provide aid at the scene, federal agents denied Pretti medical care, appearing instead to count his wounds. The Trump administration has launched a civil rights probe into the shooting, though officials previously attempted to characterize Pretti as a domestic terrorist.

This legal classification follows a federal court ruling by Judge Katherine Menendez, who declined to halt Operation Metro Surge despite acknowledging evidence of racial profiling and excessive force by agents. In response to the examiner's findings, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that agents in Minneapolis will now be equipped with body-worn cameras. Critics, including author Chantal James and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, dismissed the gesture as insufficient, arguing that the focus should remain on the abolition of the agency itself rather than procedural reforms.
