The State of Betrayal Report, released by The PBT Institute, provides the first comprehensive look at the physiological and psychological toll of broken trust. The findings indicate that 96.9% of respondents carry physical symptoms such as chronic pain, fatigue, and hormonal disruption, which often remain undiagnosed by medical professionals. Furthermore, 94.7% of subjects report being triggered by memories years or even decades after the initial event, complicating recovery efforts that typically treat betrayal as standard grief.
Dr. Debi Silber, founder of The PBT Institute, argues that the high failure rate in traditional therapy stems from a lack of stage-specific support. The research identifies a phenomenon labeled Post Betrayal Syndrome, a collection of cognitive and emotional symptoms that persist regardless of an individual's willpower or commitment to healing. For the 82% of individuals reporting constant feelings of overwhelm, the report offers a new pathway called The Five Stages of Betrayal Recovery. By moving away from generalized trauma models, the study suggests that organizations and therapists can better address the root causes of workplace disengagement and treatment-resistant anxiety.
