Senate Republicans Pivot After Trump Confrontation Over Iran War Powers

Two Republican senators reversed their stance on a war powers resolution Wednesday, bowing to intense pressure from President Donald Trump. After being branded as losers who provided comfort to the enemy, the lawmakers abandoned their previous support for limiting military involvement in Iran to align with the White House.

The procedural maneuver followed a volatile closed-door lunch where President Trump reportedly berated GOP members. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who had supported a symbolic resolution for troop withdrawal just one day prior, ultimately sided with the party leadership against the measure. Senator Rand Paul also shifted his position, changing his vote to present at the president’s urging. Senator Tim Kaine, the resolution's sponsor, characterized the reversal as a capitulation to a presidential temper tantrum, though he maintained that the chamber’s underlying stance on the illegality of unauthorized war remains unchanged.

This legislative pivot arrives as the White House pushes for an $87.6 billion supplemental funding package, with nearly $70 billion earmarked for military operations. Democrats have sharply criticized the request, arguing that the funds should be prioritized for domestic needs like healthcare and housing rather than an escalating conflict. Senator Patty Murray vowed to reject the spending proposal, calling the military surge a disastrous war of choice, while Representative Brendan Boyle emphasized that taxpayers are being asked to subsidize a conflict that has already destabilized the global economy and driven up domestic consumer prices.
