Autonomous Stores and AI Assistants: A Week in Retail Innovation

Retailers are accelerating their shift toward automation, with Migros launching its first autonomous Sunday-only store in Geneva and Disney introducing an AI-powered personal shopping assistant. These moves reflect a broader industry push to leverage technology for operational efficiency and more personalized customer experiences.

The retail landscape continues to evolve through rapid digital integration. In Switzerland, Migros is set to open an unmanned location in Geneva’s Cité-Vieusseux on July 2, utilizing sensors and surveillance to maintain operations during Sundays and public holidays. This model aims to provide shoppers with flexible hours while testing a new, modern retail format.

Simultaneously, major players are deepening their technological roots. Walmart has integrated its AI assistant, Sparky, into its live shopping events to guide consumer choices, while Disney Store is piloting an AI assistant on iOS to streamline product discovery. In the UK, Asda has partnered with Amazon Ads to refine its online retail media, and Warner’s Supermarket has deployed Quail Digital’s Pro12 headsets to improve staff coordination. Meanwhile, HelloFresh has successfully scaled its chilled fulfillment capacity fivefold by modifying hardware to work with Locus Robotics’ autonomous mobile robots.
