Florida Voting Law Sparks Multi-Front Legal Battle

As President Donald Trump pushes federal voting restrictions, a coalition of advocacy groups has launched a legal offensive against Florida’s new citizenship-verification law. Signed Wednesday by Governor Ron DeSantis, House Bill 991 mandates strict documentary proof for voter registration, setting the stage for a high-stakes court showdown over ballot access.

The legal challenges arrived in dual filings in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Northern districts of Florida. The first suit, brought by organizations including the League of Women Voters of Florida and Common Cause, characterizes the legislation as a xenophobic attempt to purge eligible citizens from the rolls. Advocates argue the requirement for birth certificates or passports disproportionately burdens naturalized citizens, young voters, and those facing financial hardship.

Simultaneously, the Elias Law Group filed a separate challenge on behalf of the Florida NAACP and the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans. Attorneys involved in the case labeled the measure one of the most restrictive in modern American history, citing the lack of evidence for widespread voter fraud as proof that the law serves political interests rather than electoral integrity.

The litigation coincides with a broader national push by the White House. Trump recently signed an executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security to establish a federal "citizenship list" and tasking the postmaster general with altering mail-in voting procedures. Civil rights leaders contend these federal actions, coupled with the state-level legislation, reflect a coordinated strategy to suppress turnout ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The ACLU and other plaintiffs maintain that these mandates exceed executive authority and violate constitutional protections regarding the administration of elections.
