Co-op bets on microdrama to turn grocery runs into social currency

Co-op has launched a four-part social media series, moving beyond traditional advertising to embrace the microdrama trend. By partnering with Carat UK and Platform Media, the retailer aims to transform mundane convenience store visits into hyperbolic, shareable storytelling designed to spark conversation across platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

The campaign, titled 'Pop to Co-op', features comedian and TV producer Jake Bhardwaj navigating everyday scenarios that rapidly escalate into comedic, exaggerated situations. Instead of relying on conventional paid media, the strategy prioritizes earned attention, aiming to embed the brand's catchphrase into daily vernacular. The microdramas serve as a talkability engine, intended to cut through the noise of algorithm-driven feeds by offering content that audiences choose to watch rather than skip.

Carat UK’s head of strategy, Chris Davies, noted that the objective is to make the brand something people actively discuss. By leveraging creator-led content and a narrative-first approach, Co-op is positioning its media strategy to align with modern search and recommendation systems that increasingly favor genuine cultural relevance. The series also features appearances by comedy talent including Freya Mallard, Elliot Cass, and Charlie Kemp, ensuring the production remains grounded in authentic, engaging humor.
