Third Way Plans $15 Million Campaign to Counter Progressive Surge

As progressive candidates continue to disrupt Democratic primaries, the corporate-funded group Third Way is preparing a $15 million offensive. President Jonathan Cowan characterizes the rise of organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America as a mortal danger to the party, signaling an impending internal battle for the future of the Democratic platform.

The proposed campaign seeks to push back against candidates who have gained momentum in potential presidential swing states. Despite significant financial opposition from outside groups like AIPAC, insurgent challengers have recently secured high-profile victories, including the recent Michigan Senate primary win by Abdul El-Sayed.

Critics argue that the investment misreads the current political climate. Maurice Mitchell, director of the Working Families Party, noted that the group is failing to acknowledge the widespread populist insurgency. Others, including Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau and journalist Nathan Newman, suggested that the funds would be more effectively spent on developing a compelling policy vision to excite voters rather than waging an internal war against the left.

Even some centrist voices have expressed doubt regarding the strategy. Derek Thompson, co-author of Abundance, warned that the plan risks validating progressive claims that big moneyed interests are actively suppressing grassroots movements. Similarly, New York University law professor Chris Sprigman suggested that such efforts are likely to prove ineffective, arguing that the establishment has historically struggled to counter political threats from either flank.
