Ansari Calls for Prosecution of Stephen Miller Over Citizenship Orders

Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) is calling for an investigation into White House official Stephen Miller, labeling his latest executive push to restrict birthright citizenship an illegal act. The demand follows a new attempt by the administration to bypass Supreme Court rulings by narrowing the definitions of who qualifies for automatic citizenship.

President Donald Trump announced two executive orders targeting birthright citizenship, focusing on children of foreign government workers, individuals involved in alleged fraud, and those linked to terrorist groups. These directives also aim to curb so-called birth tourism, despite a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming that birthright citizenship remains the law of the land. Experts, including Aaron Reichlin-Melnick of the American Immigration Council, argue the maneuvers violate the 14th Amendment.

During the announcement, Trump cited unverified claims regarding foreigners having dozens of children to secure status, despite research from Pennsylvania State University showing that fewer than 0.3% of annual U.S. births involve tourists. Immigration attorney Cyrus Mehta expects the courts to strike down the orders, characterizing the administration’s strategy as an attempt to treat constitutional protections as a loophole. While Miller maintains that the 14th Amendment was intended only for the children of formerly enslaved people, critics argue the administration is attempting to redefine settled constitutional law through policy.
