Retail Tech Weekly: AI Shifts and Physical Store Expansions

From Shanghai to the UK, global retailers are aggressively integrating AI and automated logistics into their physical footprints. This week, major players like JD.com, Kingfisher, and Asda announced strategic pivots, prioritizing data-driven efficiency and in-store technological upgrades to capture shifting consumer habits.

JD.com is set to open its 12,000-square-metre 101HOME flagship in Shanghai on September 28, targeting a "shopping upon seeing" experience that blends smart technology with lifestyle renovation services. Meanwhile, Kingfisher Group has raised its profit forecast to between £595 million and £635 million, attributing the growth to AI-enabled personalization and productivity tools that generated approximately £100 million in additional sales.

Logistics and digital infrastructure are also seeing significant movement. InPost UK is partnering with Asda to install parcel lockers across 700 stores, while Norwegian retailer VILLOID has contracted StrongPoint to build the world's largest AutoStore Pio facility to support its fulfillment expansion. In the executive suite, Morrisons has appointed Dr. Mohsen Ghasempour as its first Chief AI Officer, signaling a broader industry trend of bringing senior data leadership directly into the heart of grocery operations.
