The upgraded kiosks feature vertically mounted large-format screens and integrated overhead cameras. To enhance security and store operations, the machines use LED indicators to signal staff when assistance is required. Upon completing a transaction, customers must scan a printed receipt at a gate to exit the store, a system currently undergoing simultaneous implementation across hundreds of Lidl and Kaufland locations in Germany.
Beyond hardware, the retailer is expanding its "Lidl & Go" service, which allows customers to scan products via the Lidl Plus app on their own smartphones. Following a successful pilot, the feature has reached 37 additional UK stores. Louise Weise, Chief Customer Officer at Lidl GB, noted that the service provides shoppers with greater control over their spending and the flexibility to navigate stores at their own pace. This digital push sits alongside broader investments in personalized coupons and reward points, marking a shift toward a more connected, data-driven retail environment.
