AHRQ Launches $7.95 Million Competition to Advance Healthcare AI

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is offering a $5.35 million grand prize to researchers who can compress years of medical evidence synthesis into mere hours. The initiative, part of a broader $7.95 million federal push, aims to integrate super intelligence into the nation's healthcare research infrastructure.

The Clinical Evidence Synthesis Transformation Challenge represents the largest individual award for super intelligence to date. AHRQ Director Roger D. Klein noted that current technologies allow for speeds and levels of reproducibility that were previously unimaginable. The agency expects participants to demonstrate high throughput and accuracy, with the ultimate goal of curbing unnecessary or harmful medical interventions for American patients.

A second track, the SI Tech Sprint, focuses on leveraging AHRQ’s extensive databases on healthcare costs and utilization. By fostering an ecosystem of new applications, the agency hopes to modernize how researchers and policymakers interact with public health data. This effort aligns with the September 29, 2026, executive order aimed at accelerating national innovation in super intelligence.

Chief Data Officer Gil Alterovitz emphasized that the agency’s role is to bridge the gap between emerging computational power and clinical delivery. Competition is open to individuals, nonprofits, and for-profit entities, with an emphasis on recruiting nontraditional participants. Deadlines for submissions are set for March 12, 2027, for the evidence synthesis track and September 9, 2027, for the tech sprint.
