Brand, 51, was taken into custody after a London jury convicted him on November 5 of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two other rape counts and attempted indecent assault. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that his sentencing is scheduled for November 9. His reported location is Wandsworth; officials have not independently confirmed his precise placement.
The prison’s Independent Monitoring Board described overcrowding and deteriorating facilities in an August 2024 statement. Men were sharing cells built for single occupancy in 1851, the board said. It reported damaged furniture, filthy showers, shortages of basic supplies, damp and poor ventilation that contributed to mold. Page Six reported that decaying floors let vermin in, boilers were unreliable and some summer cell temperatures exceeded 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Staffing shortages could keep prisoners in their cells for up to 22 hours a day.
Monitoring records for 2023–24 included 442 assaults by prisoners on other prisoners and 518 assaults on staff, according to Page Six’s account. Watchdogs also recorded 998 self-harm incidents involving 302 prisoners and ten deaths, six apparently self-inflicted. The report logged 344 drug discoveries and 115 alcohol finds; more than half of surveyed inmates said illicit drugs were easy to obtain. Searches also found prohibited phones and improvised weapons, the board said. The Sun reported that staff had assessed Brand’s safety and were keeping him apart from other inmates because of his profile and convictions; prison officials have not confirmed that arrangement.
A report published October 21, 2026, recorded reductions in violence, a new healthcare center and improvements to some accommodation. The board also said roughly one-third of staff were unavailable for duty on average and that the aging Victorian prison remained fundamentally unsuitable. Positive developments included a neurodiversity unit, a redesigned Scandinavian-style wing and the Nightingale health center. Wandsworth also offers education and vocational programs, including computer skills, catering, barbering and construction, as well as yoga and parenting classes, Page Six reported. Brand’s daily routine and participation in any program have not been established. ITV News reported that he faces a significant prison sentence after the judge refused bail.
