Retailers are abandoning workforce engagement strategies in favor of aggressive cost control, according to new research from WorkJam. Surveying 150 industry professionals at the Retail Technology Show 2026, the data reveals a stark strategic reversal as rising labor costs force companies to prioritize bottom-line survival over staff retention.

Thirty-seven percent of surveyed retailers now rank cost management as their primary workforce strategy, a significant shift from 2025 when frontline engagement was the sector’s top priority. Only 5% of respondents currently view employee experience as their main focus. This move is largely driven by fiscal pressures, including National Insurance hikes and National Minimum Wage increases, which have prompted 44% of firms to pause hiring and 29% to raise retail prices.

Mark Williams, Managing Director EMEA at WorkJam, described the trend as a risky strategic reversal. He warned that while the pressure to simplify operations is genuine, neglecting the human element of the business creates long-term damage. Despite the push for efficiency, many organizations remain hampered by outdated infrastructure. Only 20% of retailers characterize their AI maturity for workforce optimization as advanced, while 31% still rely on basic management tools. Williams suggests that the path forward lies in integrating scheduling, communication, and task management into a single platform, allowing retailers to streamline operations without alienating the frontline workforce.
