Following a New York Times report detailing allegations of past volatile behavior and physical aggression against US Senate candidate Graham Platner, the political newcomer has seen a surge in financial support, collecting over $200,000 from 5,000 donors in the 24 hours following the publication.

The allegations, which include claims from former partners regarding physical intimidation and offensive online conduct, have intensified the spotlight on the combat veteran’s campaign. Platner, who is challenging Republican Senator Susan Collins, has categorically denied any physical abuse or prior knowledge of the Nazi-associated tattoo for which he has faced criticism. While he acknowledged struggling with alcohol and personal challenges during a difficult period after his military service, he maintains that the recent scrutiny is politically motivated.

The controversy has also inadvertently revived interest in Governor Janet Mills, who had previously suspended her own campaign. Sources suggest some supporters are encouraging the governor to re-enter the race should Platner step aside, though state law provides a mid-July deadline for such a change. Despite the pressure, Platner remains on the ballot and continues to receive backing from high-profile figures, including Representative Ro Khanna and Senator Bernie Sanders. At a rally in Bar Harbor, supporters dismissed the media scrutiny, framing the candidate’s history as a narrative of redemption rather than disqualification.
