Senator Bernie Sanders is set to headline a rally alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, throwing his support behind a trio of progressive candidates aiming to unseat establishment Democrats in upcoming congressional primaries. The Brooklyn-born senator intends to bolster a movement Mamdani describes as centered on ideas rather than capital.
The rally will feature Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander, three insurgents currently locked in high-stakes primary battles. Valdez is competing for an open seat in the 7th Congressional District, where polling indicates a dead heat with Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. Avila Chevalier faces a formidable challenge against five-term incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District.Brad Lander, meanwhile, is mounting a significant challenge to Representative Dan Goldman in the 10th District. Emerson College data released late last month suggests Lander holds a substantial lead of more than 20 points over the incumbent. These contests represent a broader effort to reshape the Democratic Party, with Mamdani framing the candidacies as a direct response to the influence of big money in national politics.
