In 2017, eight-year-old Maddie Aldridge was riding an ATV on the family’s property when she veered into a pond and became trapped beneath the vehicle. Spears, along with her husband Jamie Watson and father-in-law, reached the scene within moments, but the recovery was grueling. When responders finally pulled Maddie from the water, she was not breathing, leading the family to believe the worst. The tide turned only when a firefighter detected a pulse, prompting an emergency airlift to a hospital where Maddie spent two days in a coma.
During those critical hours, the situation appeared so dire that a priest was called to administer last rites. Spears describes a jarring, life-altering moment when the priest entered the room and Maddie, despite being heavily sedated and restrained, suddenly sat upright. The recovery that followed defied medical expectations, ultimately leading the family to focus on a promise Spears had made to herself during the crisis. Shortly after Maddie regained consciousness, the actress became pregnant with her second daughter, Ivey, fulfilling a vow she had whispered to God while bargaining for her first child’s life.
Today, the ordeal serves as a foundation for the family's deepened faith. Maddie, now 18, is preparing to attend the University of Southern Mississippi this August to study health sciences. Reflecting on her daughter’s transformation from a trauma survivor to a thriving student and softball player, Spears maintains that she never takes their second chance for granted.
