AOC slams Speaker Johnson’s ‘protection program’ for Trump allies

“If you don’t want to be prosecuted for crimes, don’t do crimes,” Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declared Friday. The New York Democrat’s rebuke followed comments from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who recently boasted to donors that his leadership serves as a shield against potential investigations into the Trump administration.

Johnson’s remarks, delivered at a Faith and Freedom Coalition summit, framed the prospect of losing the House majority as a threat to the president’s inner circle. Warning donors that Democrats would transform congressional committees into investigative bodies, the Speaker claimed, “I run the protection program. We’ll take care of you.”

Ocasio-Cortez characterized the rhetoric as an admission that the Republican leadership is operating a “protection racket” designed to foster a class of political impunity. She argued that the party is effectively signaling to wealthy donors that financial support guarantees immunity from oversight. Other Democrats joined the criticism, with Representative Mike Levin describing the Speaker’s stance as that of a man “guarding an operation that can’t survive daylight.”

Melanie D’Arrigo, of the Campaign for New York Health, amplified the call for accountability by highlighting a series of alleged financial conflicts. She pointed to the rapid growth of Trump’s net worth during his term, military contracts awarded to his sons’ companies, and the ongoing mystery surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein files. For critics, these examples underscore the urgent need for a shift in congressional control to address what they describe as systemic corruption.
