Hegseth Taps Musk, Luckey, and Gingrich to Lead Future of Warfare Project

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has appointed three civilians with no military service—Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich—to spearhead "Project Meridian," a 120-day initiative tasked with reimagining the future of warfare, even as the Pentagon moves to slash its senior officer ranks by 20%.

Unveiled during a "State of the Force" address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, the project aims to integrate emerging technologies into the military’s core strategy. The selection of these leaders has drawn immediate scrutiny, given that Musk’s SpaceX and Luckey’s Anduril Industries are major defense contractors. Gingrich, a former House speaker, has long advocated for an aggressive stance against Iran. Critics argue the move effectively shifts the strategic planning of the U.S. military into the hands of private sector executives and political figures who lack traditional accountability.

Simultaneously, Hegseth is doubling down on efforts to streamline the Pentagon’s leadership structure. By January, the department plans to eliminate 20% of its roughly 800 general and admiral positions, citing a need to remove bureaucratic redundancy. This transition follows the departure of over two dozen senior defense officials since Hegseth’s confirmation. Alongside these personnel cuts, the administration is establishing "Autowarcom," a new four-star command designed to scale robotic and autonomous capabilities across the joint force.
