On November 3, Morissette appeared on the “Handsome” podcast with hosts Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin. After Feimster asked whether past hurt by men had ever made her want to be a lesbian, Morissette replied, “I’m pansexual,” adding that she “get[s] everything.” She confirmed the answer when Notaro asked if she was serious, then joked that she liked to leave the revelation for the epilogue and confuse people on the way out.
In a 2008 interview with The Advocate, Morissette said her ties to the LGBTQ+ community began when she was young and had many gay friends. Her first manager was also gay, she said, and she went with him to New York nightclubs when she was 14. She recalled being curious about the people she met and described their “aliveness” as a special quality.
That year, on “The Howard Stern Show,” Morissette said experimenting with sexuality could be “a rite of passage” and disclosed that she had relations with women in her teens and early 20s. When Stern called it a “lesbian phase,” she described it instead as a “self-defining thing.” At the time, she said she was “pretty heterosexual,” and explained that she was not embarrassed by the experimentation but valued her privacy.
Morissette has also spoken about her role in “Sex and the City.” On the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in September, she said she contacted the show’s writers to suggest that Carrie Bradshaw experience “a lesbian moment.” She played Dawn in Season 3, Episode 4, “Boy, Girl, Boy Girl…,” and kissed Carrie during a spin-the-bottle game. In 2006, she appeared on “Nip/Tuck” as Poppy, a lesbian character. Morissette said sexuality did not change how she approached the character: “All human beings can be as-holes.”
Morissette has had relationships with Dave Coulier, Dash Mihok and Ryan Reynolds. She married hip-hop artist Mario “Souleye” Treadway in 2009; they have three children. In a 2019 interview with Self, she called him “an incredibly modern man” who had never had an issue with being married to an “alpha woman.”
